Beauty resolutions

Forget my birthday, Easter (chocolate overdose, anyone?), Christmas or summer... my favourite time of the year is definitely the quiet lead up to Christmas and New Year. Although most people will be going on leave today, I'm secretly thrilled that I'll still be coming in during the next week - no traffic, a quiet office, minimal disturbances (read: e-mails and phone calls). Time to take stock and reorganise for the year ahead. Time to catch up on any work still outstanding, to put new systems in place, to get some filing done (finally!), so that the new year gets off to the best possible start. I love it.

This is also the time of year when I start to think back to the events of the past year - the small, seemingly insignificant moments that turned out to be much bigger than expected, the so-called mistakes or failures, the successes - big and small. I'm not afraid to admit that I am one of those people - there's nothing I love more than jotting down a few resolutions for the year ahead.

So, to get into the spirit of things (and inspired by this post), I decided to compile a list of my beauty resolutions for 2012:

1. Continue wearing broad-spectrum sun protection every single day. 2011 was the year that I finally embraced this little beauty nugget wholeheartedly and I can proudly say that I wear sun protection on my face all day, every day. 2012's challenge is to step it up a notch, by wearing sun protection on my entire body every day, come rain or shine. (My current handbag essential is QMS MediCosmetics Sport Active Cream, a tinted moisturiser that also contains an SPF. I also love Shiseido Sun Protection Liquid Foundation SPF30).

2. Drink more water. I used to be SO good at drinking water, but for some reason I've battled with this one during 2011, and I can see it on my skin. I've started noticing my first fine lines (yes, these might have more to do with age, but dehydration causes fine lines too!). My goal for 2012 is to drink at least 1l of water every day. I don't think that's too much to ask - drinking 4 glasses of water daily is hardly a difficult task.

3. Get at least 8 hour of beauty sleep. Not only for the sake of my looks, but also for the sake of my relationships. A grumpy, tired Chereen sure makes life difficult for those around her! But yes, saying goodbye to puffy, tired eyes is another good reason to get more sleep!

4. Look after my nails. As a beauty editor, I really shouldn't be admitting this, but I secretly despise painting my nails. I just don't have the patience. I hate spending hours buffing and filing, pushing back cuticles, painstakingly waiting for each coat of polish to dry... only to smudge it all in five seconds flat because my head was suddenly itchy. (No, it's not dandruff, it's Murphy's Law). Another thing? Is there truly a nail polish out there that doesn't chip after two days? Because I haven't found it - regardless of what I've read in reviews or what it says on the bottle. There's nothing worse than chipped nail polish, so I'd rather leave my nails bare than spend an hour every two days painting and repainting. But 2012 WILL be different. I'm determined to find a nail polish that actually lasts for longer than two days, and I will force myself to sit quietly, without touching anything, for at least 15 minutes after painting my nails. Or I'll simply pay someone to do it for me. Sorted!

5. Play! I've never been very adventurous when it comes to makeup. I've found what works for me (usually a winged eye liner and gloss, or pared down eyes and a bold, red lip for evenings or special occasions), and I tend to stick with this. I had a client meeting yesterday and one of the women was rocking beautifully bright purple shadow. It looked so good that it inspired me to start playing around with makeup - I have so many beautiful products and shades at my disposal, so it's a shame that I don't experiment more often. So don't be surprised when you see me sporting an emerald green eye shadow or bright fuchsia lipstick in the new year - it's time for this beauty gal to break out of her beauty rut!

What are your beauty resolutions for 2012?

  1. I'm exactly the same when it comes to painting my nails. I'll wait an hour for them to dry and they will somehow still smudge. Haha.

  2. It's SO frustrating! I think I'll definitely be going to the professionals for that one! x
