31 Days to a calm, clutter-free home: {Day five}

Now that you've managed to rid your closet of any unworn garments (freeing up some space for that fabulous little dress from Topshop...), it's time to organise and prettify your closet. I've managed to track down some of the niftiest wardrobe fix-its, and I've included a few inexpensive DIY options, too.

For a really chic, streamlined effect, chuck out all your mismatched hangers and invest in a couple of sets of matching hangers. I currently use white plastic hangers, but I plan on swapping these for wooden hangers in the not-too-distant future (or rather, as soon as I start to recover financially from the huge expense that is having a baby!). Woolworths sells a gorgeous set of 6 wooden hangers for R120 - pricey, but well worth it if you have the cash to spend as they help maintain the shape of your clothes.

If you have very little wardrobe space to speak of, as I currently do, you may want to invest in specially designed trouser hangers so that you can hang up several pairs of trousers on one hanger, freeing up valuable hanging space. Again, Woolies offers a wooden trouser hanger (R120) that allows you to hang up to four pairs of trousers on one hanger.

You might like to stock up on Woolies' fabulous skirt hangers (R50 each) while you're at it. These allow you to pin your skirt to the hanger, preventing that unsightly jumble of garments on your wardrobe floor.

Since moving to Cape Town during 2011, I've been amazed at how quickly my collection of scarves has grown. I find it difficult to keep track of the growing number of scarves and to find a specific one while getting ready in a rush. To tame your scarf collection, try loosely tying a few scarves to one hanger, as shown in the picture below. This way, you'll be able to keep them all in one place, while being able to see your scarves at a glance - making dressing in the mornings that little bit easier.

My biggest downfall when it comes to closet organisation is the state of my shoe collection. I have many, many pairs of shoes. I've tried to organise them neatly before, but somehow, they always seem to end up lined up in front of my closet or at the front door, as opposed to tidily tucked away in my wardrobe. Lately, I've been inspired to give the box-storage solution a go: simply take a photograph of each pair of shoes, and stick each photograph to the front of the shoe box.

Underwear is another problem area for me: I've gone from keeping my delicates in a drawer, to storing them in pretty boxes. I recently discovered these fantastic diamond drawer dividers (R195 from PAX 3D), which come in handy not only for sorting your knickers, but for organising your makeup stash, too.

If you're not up for forking out R195 for a few drawer dividers, try creating your own by using a variety of smaller boxes or re-purposing cereal boxes and using these to pack away your underwear, socks, belts, and even your makeup.

I currently use a set of woven baskets that I bought at Mr Price Home for R140 to organise my beauty products, and I've used another set to organise Noah's little toiletries, socks, and bibs. These would work just as well to keep your underwear and other bits and bobs in order, too.
