How to wear a denim shirt

The thought of wearing a denim shirt - regardless of how fashionable it may be - has never really appealed to me. Until I spotted this easy, breezy washed Asanda Denim Shirt (R399) at Poetry. Now all I want to do is break out the denim, but the question remains: how does one actually wear a denim shirt?
  • First thing's first: fit is key. Look for a denim shirt that's fitted enough to tuck into a skirt or trousers, but loose enough to roll up and tie at the waist.
  • A denim shirt is a classic piece so avoid trendy washes and stick to a faded blue (the above-mentioned shirt from Poetry is perfect).
  • For a soft, feminine look, pair your denim shirt with a pastel maxi skirt. Unbutton the last few buttons of your shirt and tie the ends together to balance out the length.
  • Tone down a pair of floral trousers by adding a denim shirt and tying it at the waist, as described above.
  • For a casual look, wear your denim shirt unbuttoned over a floral dress.
  • Blue denim looks great when paired with red, so try buttoning up your denim shirt and wearing it with a pair of red or burgundy skinny jeans. Accessorise with a chunky gold neckpiece and flats.
