Skincare basics: Toners

I'll admit that I've always been on the fence when it came to toners and the importance of including this step in your skincare routine. My theory? If you cleanse your skin properly (by using a makeup remover, precleanser and cleanser) you shouldn't need a toner to rid your skin of any excess dirt and makeup. I also don't buy into the belief that a toner can minimise your pores - in order for your pores to 'shrink', they would need a muscle to contract, pulling the pore closed.

That being said, when I was faced with a breakout of epic proportions just a couple of weeks ago (I'm still dealing with the aftermath!), I was willing to try anything. I started exfoliating twice a week and used a face mask once a week. When I didn't notice a change in my skin, I decided to incorporate a toner into my routine and lo and behold: I noticed a huge improvement in my skin's texture and my spots seemed to be a thing of the past. You know when your skin just seems to glow from the inside? I've been experiencing that, for the first time since pregnancy! I've been using Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Toner (pictured top, left) in conjunction with the Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Cleanser (and my Esse Eye Makeup Remover) and I've noticed a vast improvement in the condition of my skin - enough to persuade me to make a toner a permanent fixture in my beauty routine.

Still not convinced? I've done a bit of research and discovered the following benefits of introducing a toner into your skincare routine:

1. A toner balances your skin's pH levels and boosts circulation, resulting in a more radiant, healthy complexion.
2. Toners remove excess sebum, which means that your makeup adheres better to your skin and will last longer as a result.
3. Toners contain active ingredients that help to prevent bacteria, and the alcohol contained in most toners kill the bacteria responsible for breakouts (though I would recommend investing in an alcohol-free toner, as alcohol can be incredibly drying). If you have very oily skin and frequent breakouts, opt for a toner that contains salicylic acid to zap spots before they appear.

  1. I love toners, but I only use them really to remove that last trace of makeup so In my mind my skin can feel 100% clean :)

    Great post :) xx

  3. I used a toner when I was in high school but stopped on my twenties. Pregnancy has been hellish on my skin and I also went into the whatever works phase of skin care but still haven't gone back to using a toner. I'm def going to head down to clicks to get the Eucerin one now. You're the second person to recommend it!

  6. Whilst I agree with your concept that if you clean your skin properly you shouldn't need a toner but I think for us oily/combination skinned girls it helps loads to keep one shine-free and pimple-free. I have been using Environ's toner for years now and it has made such a huge difference to my skins overall texture more glowing less shiny. The Eucerin one sounds great and definitely want to give it a try now (out of beauty curiosity haha).

  7. Great post! I believe that you should only use a tone 3 or 4 times a week but I guess it differs for everyone's skincare needs.

  8. Nice post :) I also skip the toner when my skin feels dry but if I'm suffered from a hectic breakout, it's my go-to fix.
