Wednesday words: What I know for sure...

I think it's safe to say that I am Oprah-obsessed (so it makes sense that I just happen to work at O, The Oprah Magazine, then!). I always have been, and always will be. I remember being distinctly miffed when I started my first job and realised that I would miss the 5pm time slot (when the Oprah Winfrey Show was still around, that is), so had to stay up way past my bed time to catch the 11pm rerun. I can't wait for the local and US editions of O to land on my desk each month and spend hours devouring each and every word in both issues. So, inspired by my mentor, I decided to compile a little list of what I know for sure. Here goes...

1. Heels really do make you feel more confident, sexy and even a teeny bit powerful. Since moving to Cape Town, I've had to purchase (begrudgingly, at times) a selection of flats to make long walks from my parking bay to the office, shoot days and sourcing sprees a tad more bearable. With these new additions to my closet, I've found that I opt to wear flats more regularly than I ever thought I would (I wore flats today - on an admin day that requires little to no walking at all! The horror!). But that moment when I slip on a gorgeous pair of sky-scraping heels is all I need to remember why I fell in love with heels in the first place - I love being taller and being able to look my boyfriend square in the eye (well, almost!). It also helps that I've spent a good few years practicing walking in heels, to avoid that ghastly, awkward limp. I still haven't figured out how to avoid that embarrassing public mini-stumble when you misplace one foot on an uneven surface, though...

2. Flat shoes aren't all that bad. That being said, I should probably also mention that I now know for sure that flat shoes are comfortable and do have their place. But only sometimes.

3. I reaaaaally need a holiday. And soon. I've day dreamed about jetting off to Mauritius, the Seychelles, New York and even local lovely, Greyton, in the past hour alone. I'd love the opportunity to get away from it all (work, grocery shopping, my Blackberry, traffic, unnecessary stress, demands from others... the list goes on) and get lost in a feel-good novel while lazing under an umbrella on a secluded beach somewhere. (If you have any good reads to recommend, please do so!)

{yes, please!}

4. Spending every last cent of my pocket money on magazines while growing up really was worth it. My dad used to tell me off for "wasting" my allowance on magazines on a fairly regular basis when I was younger. I love that I can now confidently look him in the eye and say, "See?! It was worth it all along. I told you it was research!" I've always had a bit of an addiction to magazines - I remember sneaking my mom's copies of Cosmo to school when I was 13 (what can I say, I have a young, hip mom!), and spent all my money on the international glossies - so it's pretty apt that I now work at a magazine. I can't imagine doing anything else - I absolutely love my job, and everything that it entails.

5. I'm incredibly fortunate... for all the opportunities that I have had in life so far, and for being able to wake up to do something I love each and every day. I guess it's true - love what you do, and you'll never work a day in your life. (And for me it's a triple-whammy - I love magazines, I love writing and I just love everything to do with beauty!)

{love what you do}

Tell me, what do you know for sure?
